Project Details
We’ve worked with John Lewis Partnership (JLP) for over 20 years and have delivered hundreds of bespoke HVAC units for them in this time.
We recently completed a comprehensive refurbishment of a rooftop HVAC unit for Waitrose Bridport. This project was unique due to the unit being craned off the roof and delivered to our factory for refurbishment.
The project began with a night crane lift operation on the 19th February 2025, and concluded successfully with the client collecting the refurbished unit 28th March 2025.
Initial Assessment & Removal:
Our team attended the site to supervise the night crane lift operation to safely remove the unit from the rooftop. Our presence proved essential helping to check all connection were disconnected prior to the lift.
Expanded Scope of Works:
Upon initial inspection, we identified that the original quote covered only:
- Fan replacement (converting from belt-driven to EC fan systems)
- Installation of a new HP coil
However, our thorough assessment revealed additional critical issues requiring attention and carried out the below additional works:
- Replacement of the seized outside air damper
- Installation of new floor plating to address corrosion issues
- Various cosmetic improvements to restore the unit to optimal condition
Technical Enhancements:
Our refurbishment included several significant technical improvements:
- Installation of new electrical isolators and cabling to ensure safety and compliance
- Integration of a 0-10V potentiometer, enabling manual fan speed adjustment without requiring a BMS control signal
- Comprehensive testing of the new fan design
- Performance verification to confirm the unit could achieve the required 4m³/s airflow
Quality Assurance:
Before project completion, we:
- Applied new signage and serial plates to the refurbished unit
- Conducted thorough in-house testing
- Verified performance metrics against specifications
- Prepared complete documentation including test results and certification
The Results:
The project was delivered on time and within budget, exceeding the client’s expectations in both performance and presentation. By refurbishing the existing unit rather than replacing it entirely, we helped Waitrose significantly reduce capital expenditure and environmental impact.
The upgraded unit now delivers improved energy efficiency through EC fan integration, enhanced airflow control via manual potentiometer adjustment, and a fully restored structural and aesthetic condition.
With airflow successfully tested at the required 4m³/s, the system is now operating at optimal performance with increased reliability and extended service life.
This refurbishment stands as a testament to our proactive approach, technical expertise, and commitment to delivering tailored HVAC solutions that add lasting value to our long-standing partnership with John Lewis Partnership.
